Location of Ballinacurra House

Ballinacurra House is located near to Ballinacurra (Irish: Baile na Cora meaning "Town of the Weir"), a small harbour village in County Cork. It lies less than 2 kilometres from the outskirts of Kinsale and about 20 miles east of Cork city.

The village grew up around the where the Owenacurra River meets the east channel of Cork Harbour. The commercial port of Ballinacurra closed in 1962 and it is now used almost exclusively for small leisure boats.

Kinsale is frequently referred to as Ireland's Riviera and enjoys a continental ambiance with a wide selection of renowned restaurants, cafes & pubs buzzing with live music, against a background of ancient forts.

Visitors are captivated by the town's setting, its long waterfront, narrow streets and slate-clad houses. Kinsale was the site of a battle in 1601 that was a turning point in Irish history. For over 300 years it was a garrison town and port of consequence, leaving a legacy of Georgian and Victorian architecture.

Kinsale is a top class centre for many activities including sailing, yachting, deep sea fishing, diving, watersports, windsurfing, horseriding and golf. There are three golf courses here including the world-famous Old Head course.

Kinsale attracts a diverse population from the four corners of the world and is one of the most sought after addresses in Ireland. This popularity is aided by its location - Cork city (40 minutes), Cork International Airport (20 minutes), Cork Railway Station (40 minutes)

Civil Marriages in Ireland

Important changes in Irish marriage law took effect from November 2007. It is now possible for civil ceremony marriages to be held at venues in Ireland other than Registry Offices or Churches - subject to a number of conditions being met. So now the choice is yours as to whether you wish a more traditional Church Ceremony in one of the many churches in Kinsale and the surrounding villages, or whether you wish to have a civil marriage ceremony at our ideal Cork wedding venue.

At Ballinacurra House we were approved for our first civil wedding ceremonies in April 2008 which has paved the way for many couples to design the wedding they want to have and venue of their choice.

These civil marriage ceremonies can be performed by numerous officials - either a government appointed HSE Registrar, priests, ministers, rabbis, etc. - so long as they have the approval from the Irish Government to perform these ceremonies in a venue outside a church, and 'provided the venue has been inspected and approved by the HSE in advance of the marriage ceremony'.

As one of the premier civil ceremony venues in Ireland we have hosted numerous civil ceremonies, civil weddings, blessings, humanist ceremonies and other multi-denominational ceremonies.

Corporate Events at Ballinacurra House

With the owners' corporate background, we understand the need for privacy for a corporate gathering. Whether you are holding a product launch, a business meeting or conference, you do not want other companies or your competitors around you.

We guarantee that you can discuss freely and openly all your business issues not only in the meeting environment, but also during breakout sessions, dining and throughout the property. And you need never fear that one of your competitors may be in the room next door or worse still, at the next table in a restaurant overhearing your private discussions. No-one need ever know you were here!

The privacy of Ballinacurra House allows you to create a unique and creative working environment and offers the opportunity to combine efficient business in an inspiring location.

How many times have you had to attend a business meeting in an uninspiring hotel boardroom or ballroom, only to find that the real business happens in the private conversations you have with your colleagues in the bar or over dinner - but who is listening to these conversations? Are one of your competitors at the next table? Is there a journalist on the other side of you at the bar? It is for this reason that the owners originally decided to setup Ballinacurra House.

Our 20 years experience in the corporate world had shown us that 'Privacy is the Ultimate Luxury' - particularly in the corporate world. It could mean the success or failure of your company or a product if the wrong people were to know what you are discussing, or even that you are discussing anything at all!

We are able to organize all aspects of your meeting including room setup, transfers, on-site or off-site activities, food and beverage.

We can set up the ballroom in a meeting style with wi-fi access, projector for your laptop presentations and flipcharts. And with the full use of the whole house, breakout areas for smaller group discussions is not a problem.

For larger meetings, we can setup our Garden Room for 100+ people in theatre style or at round tables.

We will give you expert service and the facilities required in order to make your meeting productive, successful yet enjoyable.

And if your meeting's target is to be creative with regards to a company's future direction, the house lends itself to creativity rather than a bland hotel room or company board room.

And because we are flexible, you are not restricted to fixed breakfast, lunch or dinner times. You dictate your requirements to us during your event and we will accommodate these as much as possible. We are perfectly setup for a large range of business occasions, which may include:

  • Private Business meetings, Private conferences and Private seminars, Closed-session Brainstorming, Incentive Packages
  • Corporate team building
  • Product launches, Press trips, Press Conferences and Launches
  • TV and film location shoots, Photography shoots of your products
  • Residential recording studio
  • Tradeshows
  • Residential Recording Studio
  • Courses such as Residential Management Training Courses, Residential Health and Therapy Courses and Residential Motivational Courses
  • Private Golf, Golf Groups, Corporate Golf Days, All-Ireland Golf Tours, Heli-golf and Private Jets

A strong company needs good leadership and a cohesive team to implement its strategies. And a strong team cannot be chosen - it has to be developed over time through communication and trust

Private Golf

Within a 45 minute drive of Ballinacurra House, there are 5 golf courses which suit all levels of players from novice to professional.

  • The Old Head Golf Course of Kinsale - One of the most notable world-class golf courses in the world (20 minutes by car). Unrivalled in terms of the beauty and setting of the site, Old Head Golf Links continues to take the golfing world by storm. The brainchild of John and Patrick O'Connor, the Club has developed into one of the most recognized and sought after golf experiences anywhere on earth. The Course is 20 minutes from Ballinacurra House. Old Head is a remarkably dramatic piece of Ireland, protruding over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean and is built on a 220-acre diamond of land, jutting out over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The promontory is almost an island with numerous caves running beneath your feet as you play the course. The links and practice area occupy 180 acres and the remaining 40 acres of unspoiled cliff (rising in places to over 300 feet) frame the course. Old Head, par 72, comprises of five Par 5s, five Par 3s and eight Par 4s – stretching to over 7,300 yards from the tips - with a minimum of six tees per hole. Nine holes play along the cliff tops, and all eighteen holes provide stunning ocean views. With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike.
  • Cork Golf Club (40 minutes by car) is a private club which will allow a small number of visitors to play each day. It was designed by Allister McKenzie, the designer of the Augusta Master’s course.
  • Fota Island Golf Club was home to the 2001 and 2002 Murphy’s Irish Open, joining the august company of Ballybunion, Portmarnock, Druids Glen, Killarney and Mount Juliet as an Irish Open venue. It is very much a traditional course and is maintained to the very highest of standards to ensure year round golfing enjoyment.
  • Farrangalway, Kinsale (5 minutes) This is the local golf course which is home to the Kinsale Golf Club, which is a relatively new 18-hole parkland course.
  • Ringenane, Kinsale (5 minutes) This was the original Kinsale Golf Club course and is a 9-hole course. It is suited to the novice and intermediate alike with some interesting hilly holes and stunning views of the estuary.

We can organize your golf for you, organize airport transfers, organize the buses to take you to and from the golf courses - and when you return 'home', you will be able to enjoy your own private bar and dining room to relive the days successes.

We also work closely with Irish-based and international golf tour operators. We can help golf tour operators by advising them on the best local suppliers for various services and make all the arrangements for their group whilst they are staying at Ballinacurra.

If you wish to have a golf tour organised for your group to various courses in Ireland, we can help by putting you in touch with tour operators who can help put together a tour of the best golf courses that we have to offer - both the famous and perhaps the not so famous, but just as good.

With many years experience in both the events and golf sponsorship business, the owners of Ballinacurra House are perfectly placed to organize your own Corporate Golf Day in conjunction with the Old Head Golf Links in Kinsale.

We have developed a programme rundown and costing which we can send to you, upon request, including all arrangements such as organization, tee times at the Old Head Golf Course, transfers, accommodation, food, etc

History of Ballinacurra House

The house was built around 1770 but the first recorded deeds of the property date from 1795.

Ballinacurra House underwent a major restoration during 2000 to 2003, keeping the personality of the 250 year old mansion but introducing the modern conveniences and luxuries that we have all come to expect.

The house has been restored paying a tribute to the colourful history of past-owners and residents - from the High Sheriff of Cork, to an old Cork family dynasty, an English Colonel, a retired British Counsel, a South African family, Asian expatriates and even as a Irish convent at one stage.

Ballinacurra’s eclectic history has been combined with influences from these many owners’ links with Asia, Africa, Australia and America, giving the house the exotic feeling of "East meets West meets Ireland".

Ballinacurra House’s colourful history is captured in the Ballroom with its Italian-style 'trompe d'oeil' wall, a 'work of art' painted by John Danford in 1960, and his theming of rooms to reflect his life in Japan, Africa and England.
